So embarrassing!

This friendly message can be found on all sorts of material concerned with the University of Alberta.
“The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University in this respect. . . . avoid any behaviour which could potentially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University.”

Not unique to the university at all, students and faculty everywhere are constantly reminded of ethics and policy.
I've received all sorts of material reminding me of this, along with knowledge of what will happen if I or anybody else is caught committing any sort of act of "academic dishonesty". Being expelled and not allowed to attend any sort of academic institution in Canada for several years is pretty severe. And even then one would be hard pressed to find a school willing to accept them back.
So, why did the Dean of the Medical School plagiarize his convocation speech? I'd really like to know, and his apology bothered me. It seemed like he was just trying to distance himself from the entire thing. He's resigned from his position and will be taking "administrative leave" but will continue to teach as a professor. I don't him want to stay at the University, even as a professor. I'm not a student of the medical school but it makes me very uncomfortable to be at an institution associated with it. The rules and ethics supposedly my peers and I are supposed to be adhering to aren't unique, and if any of us had been charged with committing such a act of plagiarism it would be expulsion and all the humiliation that goes with it. Why is he being allowed to remain as a professor? I just can't come to terms with this, it's damaged the reputation of the university already, I can see that. It even seems to be sending a message akin to "rules and ethics are for the subordinate people". I don't even know if my thoughts are organized very well, but I don't care. Ah, just frustrating.
