I lived in a terrible old house once, there's a general consensus that backs up my claims. Unattractive, bizarre layout, scary unfinished basement with a dangerous steep staircase and it's all next to a big dark ravine where too many people have died. Bonus because this ravine had an Aboriginal name I can't spell. One big cliché. Anyways, I often hesitate bringing these two stories up because I hate sounding like a lunatic when all I'm doing is telling the truth, but whatever. It's almost Halloween.
First up.
This takes place in the basement. For some reason, both bathrooms were down there. I hated that because it was inconvenient, smelled strange and was just creepy. My younger brother always needed someone to take him to the bathroom because he was even more scared of it than me, and I resented that. There was a large raised panel walk-in closet covered by a screen towards the right side of the stairs. The thing was rickety and nobody in their right mind would want to store anything in it. I happened to look in that direction and saw a dark silhouette, very vivid, moving around in there. It was doing something horrifying. What to do but scream and run upstairs? Of course I had to go back into the abyss again, because that's where both bathrooms were. I still think about it sometimes and try to reason with myself over what I saw. I've never been able to dismiss it completely. Other people had scary experiences in that house, I only got this and something else.
This isn't so bad depending on how you look at.
Little kids lose their teeth and new ones grow in, okay. I was hoping the tooth fairy would help me buy candy so I can destroy them. But she didn't and my little six year old heart felt slighted. So, I lay back in bed facing away from the door. It was a school day and in a few minutes I knew my mother would come yelling.
After about a minute, I heard a noise like a balloon popping. A few seconds later there it was again. Something compelled me to get up, and I looked under my pillow to find loonies.
I just can't believe there's something specific like a tooth fairy. My mother is more likely to yell than give me spare change. And my head was on the pillow. I know I didn't fall back asleep so that explanation is totally null. This bewilders me more than the scary shadow thing in the basement. What the hell happened?
